Small herds of red Duiker antelope and troops of samango Monkeys, make up the rest of thre natural inhabitants.
Beach lodge accommodation is restricted to Bazaruto and Benguerra. Transfers to the islands depart from Vilanculos and can be a short boat ride or by air. You choose.
The idyllic islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago stretch from the quaint city of Pemba in the south to the town of Palma in the north. Some of the islands in the south include a vast expanse of forest that form part of the Quirimbas National Park. The main islands are Medjumbe, Matemo and Quilalea and are accessed by boat or helicopter.
Inhaca Island, with its extensive coral reefs and pristine tropical beaches is a 40 km boat trip out of Maputo. Or you can get a charter flight. From here you can explore the nearby Xefina Island and Santa Maria point. Visit Inhaca Island Resort.
Most of Inhaca has been designated a wildlife protection area and has been a scientific research centre for many years. The university marine research station and museum, is located south of Inhaca village. Wildlife in the area includes loggerhead turtles and birds such as hammerkops, pelicans and flamingos.

Out of the range of travellers by road are the unexplored beaches to the north of Beira, Quelimane and Nampula. On the way you will find the historic town of Angoche, which bears the influences of the Arab and Swahili peoples who have traded along this coast for centuries.
